Dakota Dunes, South Dakota Siouxland Surgical Hospital (13150)The Pre-Op, PACU, and Step-down Manager is responsible for performing a variety of duties to provide quality nursing care to patients and to coordinate total nursing care for patients; for implementing specific procedures and programs; for participating with the Chief Nursing Officer and the Director of IP and OP in establishing specific goals; for determining work procedures and expediting work flow; for ensuring compliance with all operating policies and procedures and South Dakota Department of Health regulations and Federal Health Care Administration regulations; for communicating with and supervising appropriate personnel; for providing daily reports and other periodic reports; and for maintaining competencies and performing all the duties of a registered nurse in your department when required.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

1.Directly reports to the Director of In-Patient and Out-Patient’s departments.
2.Maintains nursing standards of care by writing and updating policies and procedures.
3.Maintains nursing operations by initiating, coordinating, and enforcing program, operational, and personnel policies and procedures.
4.Assures quality of care by developing and interpreting hospital and nursing division's philosophies and standards of care; enforcing adherence to state board of nursing and state nurse practice act requirements and to other governing agency regulations; measuring health outcomes against standards; making or recommending adjustments.
5.Maintains nursing staff assisting in the interviewing, orienting, and training nurses and auxiliary staff.
6.Completes daily staffing assignments and attends daily staffing meeting.
7.Work with staff to ensure that they receive lunch breaks.
8.Coordinates nurse to patient ratio by assigning nursing and staff; following up on work results.
9.Assist in coaching, counseling, and the disciplinary process for employees; planning, monitoring, documenting, and appraising job results.
10.Establishes a compassionate environment by providing emotional, psychological, and spiritual support to patients, friends of patients, and patient families.
11.Promotes patient's independence by establishing patient care goals; teaching and counseling patient, friends, and family, and reinforcing their understanding of disease, medications, and self-care skills.
12.Provides information to patients and health care team by answering questions and requests.
13.Resolves patient needs by utilizing multidisciplinary team strategies.

15.Maintains safe and clean working environment by designing and implementing procedures, rules, and regulations; calling for assistance from other health care professionals.
16.Protects patients and employees by interpreting infection-control policies and protocols; enforcing medication administration, storage procedures, and controlled substance regulations.
17.Maintains patient confidence and protects operations by monitoring confidential information processing.
18.Maintains documentation of patient care services by auditing patient and department records.
19.Ensures operation of medical and administrative equipment by verifying emergency equipment availability; completing preventive maintenance requirements; following manufacturer's instructions; troubleshooting malfunctions; calling for repairs; maintaining equipment inventories; evaluating new equipment and techniques.
20.Maintains a cooperative relationship among health care teams by communicating information; responding to requests; building rapport; participating in team problem-solving methods.
21.Contributes to team effort by accomplishing related results as needed.
22.Works with the Director of IP and OP to determine the optimal allocation of staff, per shift, on each unit.
23.Assists RNs in completing risk assessments and investigations of injury. Enters into EDGE.
24.Assists in survey compliance, quality assurance, and staff development duties, as assigned. Notifies Director of IP and OP and Educator of identified learning needs.
25.Works with Director of IP and OP to complete evaluations for employees on shift.
26.Counsels personnel, as indicated. Completes appropriate documentation and communicates with Director of IP and OP.
27.Supervises staff and assures survey compliance on a daily basis. Provides guidance and support to staff to better plan work flow.
28.Provides clinical expertise in the management of medical emergencies.
29.Responds to STAT calls to assist staff.
30.Complete investigation for incident reports and speak with involved staff. Use EDGE.
31.Assist with direct admits to surgery/returns to surgery.
32.Communicate with dissatisfied patients and families.
33.Assist with patient transfers to the hospital.
34.Provides clinical expertise in medical management, crisis, and behavior management techniques.
35.Directs staff response to emergencies, such as severe weather, fire, or bomb scare. Participates in fire drills. Directs disaster evacuation plan, as needed.
36.Meets routinely with the Director of IP and OP and C.N.O.
37.Assists with the development and implementation of nursing policies and procedures.
38.Serves and/or leads committees, as assigned, including, but not limited to, quality assurance, infection control, safety, etc.
39.Coordination and assignment of monthly cart checks (Adult Crash Cart, Pediatric Crash Cart, C.T Crash Cart, Line Cart, Airway Cart and Block Cart).All cart checks are to be completed and documented by the 15th of each month.
40.Verification of BID narcotic counts for the PACU Pyxis and give the daily sign-out sheet to the Director of IP and OP.
41.Verification that the refrigerator temperatures for the PACU Pyxis and Same Day Surgery are completed.The monthly sign out sheets will then need to be turned over to the Quality Department.
SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES:
This position has overall supervisory responsibility for registered nurses, licensed practical nurses, nursing assistants and related personnel as directed by the Director of IP and OP, C.N.O and C.E.O.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, COMPETENCIES, QUALIFICATIONS and EDUCATION AND/OR EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS:
1.Must be graduate of accredited college or university
2.Registered Professional Nurse with current state or compact state licensure.
3.Work experience as a Licensed Registered Nurse (R.N.).
4.BLS, ACLS and PALS certification.
5.Ability to demonstrate clinical competency, leadership, and teaching capabilities.
PHYSICAL DEMANDS / WORKING CONDITIONS:
1.Will be required to lift patients frequently requiring the ability to lift 40 pounds.
2.Must be able to exert at least 25 pounds of force to assist with patient transports.
3.Frequent standing, bending, and stooping involved.
4.Must possess and demonstrate critical thinking skills.
5.Dexterity: Frequent repetitive motion of hands/wrist involved.
6.Will be working in a clean, well-lighted area.
7.May be required to deal with unpleasant environmental situations resulting from patient care or patient activity.
8.Hazards and Risks: Direct patient contact with possible exposure to communicable diseases, exposure to radiation, anesthetic scavenger gases, and CRT.
