Responsibilities
The OR RN is responsible for the direct and indirect provision of professional nursing care of the patients in the operating room. The nurse is accountable for ongoing evaluation and documentation of all components of care delivered to customers within the perioperative and outpatient environment utilizing the nursing process.
Essential Job Duties and Responsibilities:

- Knows and adheres to the policies of the Dunes Surgical Hospital and demonstrates fiscal responsibility.
- Follows nursing care policies, procedures, goals, and objectives according to accepted standards.
- Ensures that the surgical room is sterile and safe for the patient.
- Works side by side with scrub nurses to help maintain the sterile field in the operating room.
- Must have strong attention to detail and physical stamina to handle long, arduous work hours.
- Assess the patient’s condition before a surgical procedure.
- Assesses the needs of the patient during the procedure to ensure the best outcome.
- Works with a physician to develop the care plan for the patient during the surgery.
- Continues to evaluate the patient’s condition during the procedure and make necessary changes to the care plan.
- Ensures that the sterile field is not compromised during the procedure.
- Keeps the surgical area clean and organized for the scrub nurse and the physician; removes instruments and sponges as they are used during the procedure.
- Organizes and prepare medical records of patients. Documents care appropriately and thoroughly. Also follows up on missing data and other patient care needs.
- Remains calm and functions as a team member during stressful and crisis situations.
- Seeks involvement in activities that promote professional growth and behavior.
- Actively participates in appropriate committees as assigned.
- Follows OSHA and other standards for protection against blood-borne pathogens.
- Uses good body mechanics.
- Informs management of applicable day-to-day situations.
- Follows employee health and other personnel and staffing policies.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, COMPETENCIES, QUALIFICATIONS and EDUCATION AND/OR EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS:
- Must be a graduate of accredited college or university.
- Registered Professional Nurse with current state licensure.
- BLS Required
- BLS certification
- Ability to function in a high stress environment.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS
- Will be required to lift patients frequently, requiring the ability to lift up to 75 pounds.
- Must be able to exert at least 50 pounds of force to assist with patient transports.
- Be able to stand, bend, stoop, and/or sit within a confined area for prolonged periods.
- While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to talk and hear.
- Dexterity: Frequent repetitive motion of hands/wrist involved.
- Will be working in a clean, well-lighted area.
- May be required to deal with unpleasant environmental situations resulting from patient care or activity.
