This position is accountable for leading the Sterile Processing team. Preparing and storing hospital supplies, surgical instruments, and equipment.

Salary: $25 - $43 (Depending on Experience)

Hours: 8 Hour Exempt


Required Skills:

Minimum Education and Experience

  • Bachelor’s degree in Business or related field preferred or an equivalent of education and experience.
  • 5+ years of experience

Required License and Certification

  • CRCST or CPSPD required
  • Certification in Healthcare Leadership (CHL) from IAHCSMM or in Sterile Processing Management from CBSPD must be obtained from one year of hire or entry into job

  • Thorough knowledge of medical terminology and nomenclature of items and equipment used by the department.

Essential Functions

  • Ability to accept suggestions for improvement from all staff and all departments.
  • Assists in handling and care of surgical instrument training classes for O.R and Sterile Processing employees.
  • Responsible for organizing work flow processes and assuring a smooth transition from shift to shift.
  • Maintain employee attendance records and administer e-time
  • Consults with Director of Surgical Services on department problems and interpretation of hospital policies to ensure department needs are met.
  • Keep updated on all AMMI standards and maintain those standards within the department.
  • Ensures proper operation of autoclave units prior to use on a daily basis. Files requisitions and inventories supplies.
  • Helps with loaning and borrowing of instruments.
  • Maintain accurate records for all autoclaves, biological tests, equipment, etc.
  • Maintain accurate records for returns/repairs while working closely with Materials Management.
  • Performs tray assemblage, proper packaging and preparation of all applicable supplies for sterilization.
  • Monitors sterility dates on supplies.
  • Processes or oversees all contaminated instruments and supplies returned to Central Service.
  • Properly loads, operates and cleans all sterilizers, gas and steam, and all general equipment using biological and chemical control tests as required by department.
  • Responsible for keeping OR and Scheduling notified of new equipment.
  • Responsible for organization of instrument trays, instrument count sheets, and instrument storage and locator files.
  • Responsible for updating equipment books/rands and maintaining files with manufacturers sterilization recommendations.
  • Ensures biological and chemical tests at beginning of the day shift and records results in appropriate log.
  • Stores prepared articles and supplies in designated areas.
  • Understands specialty equipment, keeps knowledge up-to-date, is technical resource for others, follows technology practices and standards.
  • Uses knowledge of sterilization principles to correctly wrap or package items for sterilization.
  • Responsible for successful regulatory surveys related to SPD.
  • Other duties as assigned.
