Sterile Processing Manager at USPI OrthoArizona Surgery Center
The Sterile Processing Manager manages decontamination and sterilization of equipment, instruments and supplies. Performs tests and maintains records for biological monitoring, courier assistance, and minor maintenance. Demonstrates the primary goal of efficiently providing surgical services that exceed customer expectations and improve clinical and financial operations.
- Interviewing and participating in the hiring process.
- Training of new employees.
- In-servicing employees on any new equipment or changes in best practice.
- Giving employees continuing education opportunities and maintaining records thereof.
- Keeping a communication book where minutes of in-services and staff meetings are kept.
- Staff scheduling.
- Correcting, reprimanding, and if necessary, giving written reprimands for poor work and/or OCOM policy violations.
- Overseeing records for sterilization and biological monitoring.
- Ordering supplies.
- Keeping copies of forms and updating them as needed.
- Evaluating sterile processing products for better performance vs. cost efficiency.
- Works in conjunction with the OR staff to provide timely sterile instruments.
- Scheduling instrument sharpening and evaluating which instrument sets need service.
- Cleaning and sterilization of instruments received from OR after each case.
- Responsible for being familiar with and carrying out all decontamination and sterilization according to department policy, infection control standards, state and federal regulations, and manufacturer instructions for use.
- Assists in cleaning instrument and nursing areas surrounding surgery suite, as needed, under supervision of O.R. nursing staff.
- Responsible for ensuring routine maintenance of Autoclave and informing the O.R. Nurse Manager/Director of any malfunctioning equipment needing repair.
- Carries out biological monitoring of the autoclave(s).
- Communicating with loaner instrument companies to expedite bringing in sets for preparation of future cases.
- Maintaining rep/vendor contact information.
- Maintaining a collection of washing and sterilization instructions from instrument/equipment manufacturers.
- Conducting end-of-month and end-of-year data/productivity reporting.
- Performs other tasks as part of the O.R. team as assigned by the O.R. Nurse Manager and/or other O.R. nursing team members, including retrieving phone messages, assisting to wheel patient gurneys, assisting with medical supply inventory, etc.
- Actively participates in the Quality Improvement program and other ongoing risk management and safety programs as part of the O.R. team.
- Follows OSHA and other standards for protection against blood borne pathogens.
- Attending monthly Performance Improvement/Infection Control/Safety meetings
- Creating yearly departmental goals and overseeing their completion.
- Uses good body mechanics.
- Informs Director of applicable day-to-day situations.
- Follows employee health and other personnel and staffing policies.
- Maintains patient and hospital confidentiality at all times.
- Supervisory Responsibility
- This position has direct supervisory responsibilities and serves as a coach and mentor for other positions in the department.
Qualifications
- High School Diploma or Equivalent
- Minimum of 1-2 years of Sterile Processing experience
- Completion of a Sterile Process Certification program is preferred
- Experience with all types of sterilizers
- Knowledge of operating room instrumentation and procedures
- Familiarity with medical terminology and departmental supply items
- Ability to quickly adapt to changing conditions of the patient when needed
