The Associate Vice President (AVP) Operations will implement operational best practices, support onboarding of new centers, serve as interim administrator and / or regional leadership and oversee other special projects in various geographies within the Market Presidents “market”. The AVP Operations is expected to execute against a pipeline of operational priorities aligned on with the Market President to advance USPI’s operations and strategic priorities. This will include organic growth and physician engagement, partnership management, OR optimization, and cost management initiatives. The AVP Operations will demonstrate a commitment to quality, safety, compliance, and patient experience consistent with USPI’s operating expectations.
As part of the role, the AVP Operations will supply interim leadership and oversee the operations, finance and partnership management of facilities where there is a Regional Vice President vacancy or where a larger complex facility or multiple facilities may need corporate oversight and assistance. The AVP Operations will manage the overall guidance and development of the assigned center(s) and executing initiatives to deliver upon the center(s) performance goals. Lastly, the AVP Operations will help support a seamless transition of leadership of the center(s) to a permanent leader.
When the AVP Operations is not serving in interim leadership roles, they will support integration and onboarding of new facilities into USPI, implementation of special projects and other operational priorities.
This is an exempt status position that often requires work outside of normal business hours, including travel.
Responsibilities and Expectations

Growth and Physician Relationship Management
- Develop and maintain presence in the region and/or facility(s) & actively participate in new physician recruiting. Develop relationships with physicians to closely monitor activities around earning more business from existing utilizers. Engage in the facilities and with physicians.
- Engage with Health System Partners (HSPs) and physician groups to earn appropriate cases at all facilities within area of responsibility.
- Participate at Governing Board meetings and Partnership meetings, as appropriate.
- Assist Administrators in managing equity transactions and ensuring the proper processes are followed.
- Have in-person meaningful discussions with our physicians about succession planning.
- Support communications with HSPs and physician partners about any/all relevant partnership matters.
- Ensure positive and honest view of USPI’s value to each facility.
Managing Operational Performance
- Help Administrators develop annual business plans and budgets. Then ensure that they are held accountable against those plans.
- Share business plans and budgets with Governing Board members. Walk through assumptions and expectations of our physicians and how they directly impact those plans. Keep the Board updated on progress towards.
- Actively lead/participate in the monthly report out process.
- Utilize USPI resources to drive value for partnerships.
- Educate facility leaders on operational metrics and how they should utilize data to drive performance.
Governance, Home Office Interface Management & Quality
- Continuous cadence and touch base with home office compliance and legal resources to ensure your portfolio is being safeguarded.
- Consistent adherence to the escalation policy.
- Support home office functions with prompt submission of requested data.
- Weekly volume projections
- Forward looking forecasting and budgeting processes
- Survey and other data requests
- Support Market Chief Strategy Officers to drive high acuity growth.
- Support Market Chief Financial Officers to ensure operational and cost discipline.
- Support Development team in your region and/or facility(s).
Leadership Development and Accountability Management
- HR and leadership training. Engage with HRDs to reduce turnover and create a culture that attracts and retains talent.
- P&L, BS and AR Management training (how admins should think about, interpret and ultimately act on their financials).
- Talent assessment and identification so that Admins/BOM’s/DON’s are training their replacements.
- Always adhere to escalation policy and ensure continuous education on the policy.
- Create a culture of accountability with clear KPI’s that facility leadership will be measured against.
REQUIRED SKILLS:
Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree required. Prefer Master's degree in Business Administration or Healthcare Administration. Equivalent experience considered.
- Minimum five years’ experience with exposure to healthcare business development & operations, finance and business consulting
- Demonstrated experience in driving operational performance, developing growth strategies and strong people management skills.
- Excellent verbal, written and formal presentation communication skills.
- Ability to work well with “C” level healthcare partners, physicians, employees, patients, and fellow workers.
- Strong critical and strategic thinking skills
- Excel & PowerPoint analytical and presentation skills are required.
- Strong financial acumen and ability to effectively articulate key business drivers, financial and operational performance metrics and results
- Strong mathematical aptitude to aid in financial budgeting, reporting and analysis.
Travel:
Candidates must be able to travel within the Market which includes locations in the Greater Houston Area, Victoria, TX, Oklahoma City, OK & Dunes, SD.
Candidates will be required to pass a Motor Vehicle Record check.
