Summary of Responsibilities:

To greet patients in a professional, courteous manner and obtain and document pertinent medical and ophthalmic patient history on the appropriate forms.

Essential Job Functions:

  •  Provide optimum assurance of safe surgical environment.  Check preoperative and PACU areas, materials and equipment for appropriate patient care.
  •  Ensures clean, safe environment through continued alertness to safety, explosive hazards and aseptic techniques.
  •  Maintain appropriate levels of office supplies and other materials to allow staff to complete assigned responsibilities and provides for patient needs by submitting approved purchase requisitions.
  •  Assists in control of traffic and personnel to ensure proper control of infection and asepsis. 
  •  Transport patients for discharge.
  •  Discontinue IV catheter as directed by nurse.
  •  Assists in efficient turnover by performing patient care responsibilities in timely, efficient manner. 
  •  Clean stretchers according to infection control policy
  •  Respect and understand the patient right to treatment and right to involvement in treatment decisions.
  •  Obtain vital signs for preoperative and postoperative phase. · Participate in staff education programs
  •  Participate in Surgery Center quality improvement activities.

Duties and responsibilities

  • may be added, deleted or changed at any time at the discretion of management, formally or informally, either verbally or in writing.
  •  Ability to create a trustworthy and comfortable environment for patients 
  •  Able to get patient blood glucose as directed by nurse (CLIA competency)
  •  Able to administer eye drops as directed by surgeon
  •  Able to obtain intraocular pressure using Icare
  •  Competency for cleaning, disinfecting and storage of lenses
  •  Ability to communicate in a calm, orderly, and non-threatening manner.
  •  Ability to work with interruptions and to manage multiple priorities ·
  • Ability to speak, understand and write fluent English ·
  • Assists other staff as needed and attending required meetings ·
  • Ability to work as a team member. ·
  • Ability to manage multiple tasks simultaneously. ·
  • Empathetic with patients’ needs and concerns. ·
  • Well organized with attention to detail. ·
  • Treat patients with respect.

Minimum Education Requirements:

  • High school diploma or equivalent. · Medical Assistant Certification preferred.
  •  One year of experience working with electronic medical/health records
  •  One year experience working in healthcare as a Medical Assistant or related area in physician practice or hospital
