Position Summary


The Insurance Verifier / Surgery Scheduler is responsible for verifying patient insurance benefits, obtaining authorizations, estimating patient financial responsibility, and scheduling surgical procedures. This role plays a critical part in ensuring accurate insurance processing, efficient operating room scheduling, and a positive patient experience.


Insurance Verification & Financial Clearance


•    Review patient demographics, insurance information, and scheduled procedures.
•    Identify required implants related to scheduled procedures.
•    Verify insurance benefits through payer portals and phone calls.
•    Determine and document estimated patient financial responsibility.
•    Post all insurance verification and billing comments accurately.
•    Contact patients regarding balances due prior to surgery and attempt pre-collection.
•    Verify and obtain required pre-authorizations or pre-certifications.
•    Reconcile daily schedules to ensure all patients are verified.
•    Notify management of discrepancies, difficult patient situations, or patients unwilling to pay prior to or at time of service.
•    Maintain high patient satisfaction through professional and compassionate communication, as reflected in patient surveys.

Surgery Scheduling Responsibilities


•    Schedule all surgical procedures accurately and efficiently.
•    Obtain and enter all required scheduling information from surgeons or their schedulers.
•    Maintain awareness of departmental instrument and equipment limitations.
•    Communicate with the OR Director/Administrator regarding block time utilization.
•    Coordinate special equipment, instrumentation, supply, and staffing needs with the OR Director.
•    Proofread and edit all surgery schedules prior to distribution.
•    Resolve scheduling conflicts and procedural questions with the OR Director.
•    Keep department managers informed of schedule changes impacting daily operations.
•    Prepare and distribute the finalized surgery schedule for the following day.

Qualifications


•    Minimum 2 years of experience in insurance verification required.
•    High school diploma or equivalent required.
•    Strong verbal and written communication skills; ability to communicate effectively with patients both in person and over the phone.
•    Familiarity with patient accounting and scheduling software.
•    Working knowledge of Microsoft Excel, Word, Outlook, and internet-based systems.
•    Ability to read and interpret insurance explanations of benefits (EOBs) and managed care contracts.
•    Demonstrated longevity and stability in previous roles preferred.
