Certified Surgical First Assistants are an integral part of the surgical team, providing essential nursing care to patients during surgical cases. Their role requires a high level of accuracy and professionalism in a fast-paced surgical environment. Certified Surgical First Assistants are responsible for ensuring that patients receive the highest standard of care during surgery. Their ability to maintain a professional approach while providing nursing care is critical in ensuring positive patient outcomes while keeping patients and their families informed. Will work directly with surgeons, medical/surgical staff and post-acute caregivers to create comprehensive patient care from pre- to post-op. Our center performs a broad range of outpatient surgical procedures. Our mission is to care for every patient and their family as if they were our own. Each patient, each family, each and every time.
Job Summary
Anticipates the needs of the surgical team. Establishes and maintains a sterile field during surgical procedures in the operating room. Reporting Relationship: Reports to Clinical Director/Administrator
Job Responsibilities
- Ensures sterility of all supplies and instruments during setup of surgical procedures.
- Retains all specimens to be sent to pathology, confirming the source/name of the specimen with the surgeon.
- Transports all surgical equipment to appropriate cleaning areas. Assists in sterile supply with cleaning and reprocessing of instrument sets.
- Uses Standard Universal Precautions, appropriate hand hygiene, personal protective equipment, and safe practices to ensure personal safety and a safe environment.
- Follows all equipment and safety guidelines and is responsible for knowledgeable use and care of equipment.
- Complies with Policies & Procedures and adheres to safety guidelines to ensure a safe work and patient care environment.

Education and/or Experience
- High School Diploma/GED
- Completion of a Surgical Technician Program.
- NBSTSA Surgical First Assistant Certification required.
- Two years of Certified Surgical First Assistant experience in multiple specialties or an equivalent combination of education and experience is required.
- Able to deal with problems involving a few concrete variables in standardized situations. Other skills and abilities: General familiarity with medical terminology as it pertains to anatomy and surgical procedures in an operating room.
