Job Summary:
The Surgical Care Assistant assists in every day duties of the operating room and demonstrates knowledge of aseptic technique. 

Essential Job Duties and Responsibilities:

The following description of the job responsibilities and performance expectations are intended to reflect the primary responsibilities of the job, but are not intended to describe all duties other responsibilities as may be assigned from time to time.

·Scrub hands and arms accordingly to Sterile Scrub Technique Policy.Dons sterile gown and gloves, maintaining sterile technique.

·Perform scrub #2 role as directed/assigned, primarily holding retractors and/or cameras.

·Open sterile packs and supplies, using surgeon’s preference card for specific requests.Use supplies conservatively and efficiently.

·Assists with draping of patient and confirms the operative area and procedure with the surgeon.

·Attach light handles and hands-off the appropriate equipment to begin the procedure to the circulating nurse.(Example: bovie, suction, simpulse).

·Follow proper procedures regarding exposure to Category I tasks.Universal precautions/BBp standards in effect at all times.Eye protection will be worn by all Surgery Center scrubs at all times.

·Follow proper procedure for handling hazardous waste materials.

·Retrieve warm blankets.

·Assist in moving and positioning patients.

·Taking litter out of room and clean when necessary.

·Retrieve in-patient beds as needed.

·Gather supplies and retrieve items when necessary.

·Arrange OR equipment as directed by Circulator and Scrub Tech.

·Hold legs/arms for sterile prep and tourniquet application.

·Turnover rooms – clean, remove trash, etc.

·Spread table in hallway for next cases.

·Transport instruments/tables to Decontamination Room.

·Stock warmers with blankets and fluids.

·Stock sterile supply carts.

·Return unused instruments and supplies to storage area.

·Replace cleaned equipment carriers to shelves.

·Restock operating rooms as necessary.

·Restock linens in OR hallway.

·Assemble case instrumentation for next day.

·Assist with inventory/expiration date checklists.

·Provide additional support in the SPD area.

·Provide support and additional duties as deemed necessary and as directed by OR Supervisor.

Occupational Exposure:

Category I exposure to blood borne pathogens, frequent exposure to chemical hazards

Physical demands/working conditions:

Require high-level visual and auditory acuity for timely response and patient care activities.Ability to move quickly in response to physician and patient needs, occasional overhead and low reaching, bending, and the ability to exert force of up to 50 lbs. occasionally, up to 20 lbs. frequently and/or up to 10 lbs. constantly.


Required Skills:

Qualifications:

High School Diploma/GED required

Current BLS certification

At least 2 years prior experience preferred
