Overview
First Assist PRNs are an integral part of the surgical team, providing essential nursing care to patients during surgical cases. Their role requires a high level of accuracy and professionalism in a fast-paced surgical environment. First Assist PRNs are responsible for ensuring that patients receive the highest standard of care during surgery. Their ability to maintain a professional approach while providing nursing care is critical in ensuring positive patient outcomes while keeping patients and their families informed. Will work directly with surgeons, medical/surgical staff and post-acute caregivers to create comprehensive patient care from pre- to post-op. Responsibilities
Job Summary:A surgical first assistant plays a vital role in a successful surgical procedure. They are primarily in charge of assisting surgeons, such as by arranging and handing over tools, holding open incisions, and dressing surgical wounds.
North Atlantic Surgical Suites is an ambulatory surgical center specializing in total knee and hip replacement surgery and orthopedic spinal surgery. Conveniently located in Salem New Hampshire, the state-of-the-art facility was created by leading-edge surgeons from Boston area Hospitals to provide the best possible patient experience. We provide first-class surgical services for local communities and recognize our employees as our number one asset.
SPECIALTIES
- Total Hip and Knee Replacement
- Surgeries of the Lumbar and Cervical Spine including Kyphoplasty and Vertebroplasty
May perform any of the following duties with the goal of preparing the room and the patient for the surgical procedure:
- Possess a working knowledge of operating room procedures with respect to attire, infection control, sterile technique, maintaining integrity of the sterile field and draping the surgical patient within the surgeon’s guidelines.
- Provide operating room support to physicians and surgeons, including assisting surgeons during procedures and passing require instruments during surgery.
- Comply with all HIPAA rules and regulations.
- Communicates effectively and courteously with visitors, physicians, and their office staff, patients, and employees. Maintains patient, physician, and employee privacy and confidentiality per policy.
- Complies with Policies & Procedures and adheres to safety guidelines to ensure a safe work and patient care environment.
- Serves as a resource to other members of the health care team.
No Weekends/No Major Holidays/No Call Required

Required Skills:
Education and/or Experience:
- High School Diploma / GED
- Completion of a Surgical Technician Program.
- NBSTSA Surgical First Assistant Certification required.
- Two years of Certified Surgical First Assistant experience in an orthopedic setting or an equivalent combination of education and experience is required.
- Able to deal with problems involving a few concrete variables in standardized situations. Other skills and abilities: General familiarity with medical terminology as it pertains to anatomy and surgical procedures in an operating room.
