Surgical Technologist/Scrub Tech at Surgical Institute of Reading

Job Summary: The Surgical Technologist scrubs for surgical procedures and demonstrates competence while functioning as a member of the surgical team. Maintains a sterile field during surgical procedures.  Prepares supplies, instruments, and equipment related to these procedures. Supports the philosophy, objectives, and goals of the Surgery Center. Supports and participates in quality improvement activities.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Ensure sterility of all supplies and instruments during set-up of surgical procedures.
  • Assist circulating nurse and surgical team in maintaining a sterile environment.
  • Gather necessary surgical supplies and equipment.
  • Perform sponge, needle, and instrument counts pre-operatively and intra-operatively with the circulating nurse.
  • Gown and glove surgeons and assistants.
  • Keep physician preference cards accurate and updated.
  • Retain all specimens for pathology, confirming source and name with the surgeon.
  • Transport surgical equipment to cleaning areas and assist with instrument reprocessing.
  • Interact professionally and effectively with patients, visitors, and healthcare team members.
  • Follow Standard Universal Precautions, infection control protocols, and safety guidelines.
  • Serve as a resource to other members of the healthcare team.
  • Maintain required certifications such as CPR.
  • Act in accordance with the vision, mission, and business philosophy of the Center.

Qualifications

  • High School Diploma/GED; completion of a Surgical Technician Program required
  • Certification as required by state and/or center
  • 1+ years of Surgical Tech experience in an Operating Room setting.
  • Must possess a strong knowledge of surgical procedures and management of the surgical patient
  • Understanding of aseptic techniques and their implementation
  • Ability to quickly adapt to changing condition of the patient when needed
  • Must excel in teamwork and possess strong communication skills to effectively collaborate with staff, engage with patients, and coordinate with physicians
